Week One Game MVP
Here at Redskins Capital Connection, we have a tradition dating back to the first year of our flagship podcast; each week during the regular season, Mark Phillips and myself select the three best Washington Redskins players from the previous game.
But we don’t just select the top three players each week and move on. Instead, we allocate points to each of the top 3 players, in order from best player, second best player, and third best player. At the end of the season, we tally up the points, and the player at the top of the leader board is crowned our Redskins season MVP.
In 2017, who will join previous winners such as Jordan Reed and Brandon Scherff as the RCC Season MVP? Check back here each week to monitor the results as they come in!
Week One
1 Vote – Kendall Fuller
5 combined tackles
1 Pass Defended
1 Forced Fumble*
The sophomore Cornerback burst out of the gates in week one, playing with a fierce determination that new Defensive Backs Coach Torrian Gray would have loved. Such was the strength of Kendall Fuller’s performance this week, not only did Pro Football Focus grade him as the number one Redskins player on the field, but they actually graded him as the fifth best Cornerback in the entire NFL in week one. Impressive.
Fuller was also directly responsible for a Redskins turnover on a backwards pass, which he probably should have been credited with a forced fumble on, but the statisticians disagreed.
2 Votes – Ryan Kerrigan
3 combined tackles
0.5 sacks
1 Interception
1 Pass Defended
Three times in Ryan Kerrigan’s career he’s found the football in his hands for an interception, and three times he’s taken the football all the way to the house for the pick six. That’s ridiculous.
Kerrigan had one heck of a purple-patch during the game, notching up the pick-six, half a sack (with Matt Ioannidis), a tackle-for-a-loss, and a 15-yard penalty after he was chop-blocked while being engaged all in the space of about 15 defensive snaps.
3 Votes – Zach Brown
12 combined tackles
2 Tackles-For-Loss
It’s easy to see why Zach Brown was a Pro Bowl player in 2016 after watching his debut in the burgundy and gold. Flying to the ball carrier, shutting down the running backs, and covering the Tight Ends, Brown led the Redskins in total tackles (7-5) and looks to well and truly have cemented himself as a starter. Zach Brown never looked out of position, and on more than one occasion he brought the running back down for a loss behind the line of scrimmage
The NFC has stronger competition at the Inside Linebacker position when it comes to making the Pro Bowl, but regardless, he played at a Pro Bowl level again in week one.
2017 Leader Board
3. Zach Brown
2. Ryan Kerrigan
1. Kendall Fuller
