Washington Redskins Select Josh Doctson, WR, TCU: How he Fits
Football player. That’s what Scot McCloughan wants, and that’s exactly what Josh Doctson is. Welcome aboard your new 6’2 wide receiver Redskins nation. This pick will be full of controversy because Scot McCloughan chose Doctson over Laquon Treadwell of Ole Miss.
However, although I liked Treadwell as a prospect as well, I do think Doctson is a bit of a more complete prospect. Doctson owned the combine best 41 inch vertical, and his background in basketball combined with his elite body control makes him as dangerous of a possession receiver as they come. If Kirk Cousins throws the ball in Doctson’s region, chances are he is going to catch it.
That isn’t to say that Doctson is simply a possession receiver, he also possesses good long speed and tracks the deep ball very well. Doctson fit’s the McCloughan profile of a player that has been through adversity, as he started his career at Wyoming before transferring and ultimately walking on at TCU. However, because of that transfer, Doctson is an older prospect who will turn 24 this season.
As for how he fits with the Skins? He gives the Redskins a very complete and dangerous receiving core if they can all stay healthy and on the field. They have an elite receiving tight end in Jordan Reed, speed to take the top off the defense in DeSean Jackson, and now a receiver in Doctson who can hurt you in just about every way. Oh yeah, and good luck trying to cover Reed and Doctson in the red-zone.
Others might not like it, and this is a similar situation to McCloughan’s first draft where fans jumped up and down for passing on Leonard Williams only this year with Treadwell. However, I don’t think it will take long for Redskins Nation to warm up to the versatile, dangerous Doctson.
Investing an early round pick in a wide out means that Andre Roberts has played his last snap in burgundy and gold, and it likely means that at least one of Jackson and Garcon will not return after this season.

At the end of the day, I love this pick. There were some other solid options available (a lot of DT and Ragland as well), but it’s an extremely deep defensive line class and the Redskins can easily address that position later in the draft. Not to mention, a receiver like Doctson is exactly the type of receiver Kirk Cousins needs to continue his development.
