After Tuesday was their first day off for Training Camp, the Redskins hit the field on Wednesday with their batteries recharged, well rested.

Training Camp Report: Day 7

With the Houston Texans coming in to town tomorrow morning for what will surely be a high-tempo practice session, the Redskins opted for a lighter afternoon practice session today compared to previous days. The team were not wearing pads today, and there was no contact in either the 7-on-7 or 11-on-11 scrimmages.

• Quarterback Robert Griffin III had what could be considered his first ‘off’ day today, missing a few throws due to a combination of good coverage from the defense, receivers dropping balls, and throws that went over the heads of his receivers too. On one series, Griffin went 0 from 3 on his passing attempts, as seen here in my live tweet coverage:

• Terrance Knighton didn’t participate in the afternoon practice session, after leaving walkthroughs early this morning. Word is that he is battling a cold.
• Junior Galette also is still not participating with the team in full practices yet, and Coach Jay Gruden told me during his press conference today that it was “doubtful” he’ll participate against the Texans, as well.
• Tight End Jordan Reed had a strong practice today, making a couple of athletic plays that demonstrated he is feeling healthy and confident. The one-handed catch he made along the sideline was especially pretty.
• Fellow Tight End JeRon Hamm, who has himself been catching peoples eyes during Training Camp, had what was definitely the catch of the day today, using his tall frame to get up over the defender and pluck down a 15 yard catch whilst falling backwards to the ground. He has continuously shown more than Logan Paulsen when it comes to his usefulness as a pass catching Tight End. If coaches like his blocks and his work on special teams, he could surprise some by making the final 53 roster.
• Two players who certainly had days to forget were Kickers Kai Forbath and Ty Long. Towards the end of practice, both had multiple attempts at 40 to 45 yard field goals, and both missed more kicks than they made. Chris Baker evidently put himself in charge of running “distraction duties”, because he was chirping in both kickers ears as they were kicking. After the 6th or 7th miss in a row, Baker yelled out “We in their heads!”
• Lots of interest from fans and media alike today as a majority of the first team 11 on 11’s saw Brandon Scherff line up at Right Guard, and Morgan Moses at Right Tackle. It’ll be interesting to see if this is a temporary change or if it persists throughout the next few days.
• The Wide Receiver drills today showed as a good glimpse of what the final depth chart will be at the position, with Receivers Coach Ike Hilliard specifically lining his players up in order of DeSean Jackson, Pierre Garcon, Andre Roberts, Ryan Grant, Jamison Crowder and Evan Spencer.
• The defense caused all three Quarterbacks to extend plays with their legs today after the pocket had collapsed. It’s fair to say that, in this regard, Robert Griffin III looked much stronger than either Cousins or McCoy.
• I got a good up close look at Bashaud Breeland doing some rehab work on his injured knee today, and he was moving relatively freely and without any signs of pain.
• Undrafted rookie Cornerback Deshazon Everett is impressing Defensive Backs Coach Perry Fewell, drawing praise after shutting down Pierre Garcon nicely on a deep go route.

Projected Week One 53 Man Roster

A couple of changes to the projected Week One roster from the last time we looked at it;

• With Tevin Mitchel likely out for the season with a torn labrum in his left shoulder, DaMon Cromartie-Smith has been seeing reps with the second team defense in camp. However, don’t count out brand new #Redskins UDFA Deshazor Everett, who is impressing Defensive Backs coach Perry Fewell with his work ethic and physicality 3 days after joining the team.
• On Special Teams it is certainly looking like the standard operating procedure on game day will be Andre Roberts on kick returns, and Jamison Crowder on punt returns.
• The last time we posted our roster projection, we had Culliver and Hall on the wrong sides of the field (credit to Samuel Gold for pointing this out!).
• As we noted in our write up on the Offensive Line yesterday, it certainly appears that the Redskins are looking to keep four backups across the line, and have been rotating these backups through different positions to get them up to speed.
• Kyshoen Jarrett is listed here as a backup Free Safety, but he’s also been getting snaps at Nickel Corner throughout camp, as well as heavy utilization on Special Teams. He’ll be one of those types of players who can be plugged in at different spots as required.
• Due to his one game suspension, Bashaud Breeland will technically not be on the week one 53 man roster, which is why you do not see his name here. As soon as he is healthy and not-suspended, he’ll slot straight back in.
• There are growing murmurs amongst people in the know that Kirk Cousins may not make it on to the final 53 man roster, with the team likely to try and seek a trade that would net them at least something in return before they almost certainly lose him at the end of this season. For now, we have him on the roster, but it’s definitely a theory (and that’s all it is at this time) that is gaining traction. Coach Jay Gruden was asked the question directly at his press conference today, and this is what he said;

“We’re going to let the preseason games really be the factor in how many we keep and who’s No. 2 and who’s No. 3. Last year we kept three obviously. That’s not etched in stone.”
