Redskins Not Yet Ready For All Their Rowdy Friends on Monday Night
Have you ever felt outclassed in a public setting before?
Maybe it’s walking into a jewelry store and having no idea what to get your significant other and saying “It costs how much?”
Maybe its going to a fancy dinner and asking if they have Bud Light on tap and the waiter politely coughs and says “We do not carry domestic beers, sir.”
Perhaps it was that time when someone asked you if “you could please get down and stop dancing on the counter” at Applebee’s during one of their notorious happy hours? We’ve all experienced that feeling, I mean who hasn’t been to Applebee’s?
The Washington Redskins were outclassed in every aspect of the game against the Pittsburgh Steelers including coaching, offense, defense, and special teams. Let’s start with offense, since that was the supposed strength of this team going into the season and was surprisingly the biggest let down of the game.
Kirk Cousins reverted to his old ways and threw 2 INTS and zero touchdowns by going 30 of 43 for 329 yards. He was timid, cautious, and inaccurate. The only thing he might of done right, is that he spread the ball around. Golly, what a small silver lining that is.
Otherwise, he didn’t seem in control of the team and it showed with a sputtering offense that took too many field goals when it needed touchdowns. The running game is clearly deficient and lacks any creativity from any of the backs and looks to already be a season long harbinger of sadness and frustration.
Cousins will have to put the offense squarely on his shoulders and get used to throwing 40 to 50 times a game because the run game will barely give any relief. Kind of makes one wish Alfred Morris was still on the team and not about to come into FedEx next week, as a Cowboy no less, and show everyone how much the Redskins already seem to miss him.
The Redskins defense, needs a lot of work up front stopping the run and applying pressure to the quarterback. They did neither of those things against the Steelers and were beaten both on the ground and in the air. Bashaud Breeland showed some glimpses of greatness and ineptitude, by being outplayed by one of the best receivers in the game in Antonio Brown, who might also be one of the best football players in the league as well.
The defensive line just gave away yard after yard, with 143 of those yards to DeAngelo Williams, as he ran hard both between the tackles and on the perimeter. The secondary grew tired of tackling Williams as he finally broke through several defenders to seal a Steeler victory in the 4th quarter.
The Redskins special teams made this game somewhat interesting in the first two quarters by making a pair of field goals but doing nothing else to change the momentum.
Overall, had, the Steelers showed mercy and kicked field goals instead of going for it on two successful 4th down conversions the game might have been a little close. Alas, it was not to be and the Steelers gained confidence by never really utilizing their special teams. The reason being Steelers Coach Mike Tomlin had guts.
Tomlin was the real difference maker in the game. He made the call to go for it on 4th and 1 with his team trailing by six early in the game. Sensing a real chance to take momentum and never look back. Ben Roethlisberger’s perfect pass on that 4th down to Brown made it 7-6 and the Steelers knew the night was theirs.
Skippers like Tomlin know when momentum is about to change and know how to capture that momentum and crush their enemies’ spirit.
Jay Gruden seemed outmatched in this chess game and didn’t adjust his offense or defense enough to win control of the game back after that devastating 4th down conversion touchdown by the Steelers.
The rest of the game after that point was precision execution by the Steelers, as the Redskins desperately tried to figure out how to get off the field on 3rd downs both on defense and offense.
It was one of those nights that started with high hopes and expectations. Great weather, a giant American flag, a military flyover, free burgundy towels and most importantly, a six point lead.

Could the Redskins hang with the class of the NFL? Or would they sadly meander up on that Applebee’s counter top and do the saddest of dances, while asking the Maitre D’ “How much for the Bud Light again?”
Too bad. Maybe next time the team will be ready to hang with the class of the NFL. Maybe those bounces will come their way. Maybe.
