Today the Washington Redskins have released last season’s starting RG Chris Chester and CB Tracy Porter, who appeared in only three games.
As a Free Agent signing last season, Porter battled hamstring and shoulder injuries, was very limited in action, and only appeared in three games as a Redskin. In those three games, Porter had 5 total tackles and 1 pass defended. It’s being reported that Porter being cut will save the Redskins $2.2 million in cap space.
Chester started all 16 games last seasons and has been with the team since 2011 and has started every game since then. Last season Chester struggled (as did the entire o-line) but also does not fit with the team’s current plans. It was easy to see that Chester never really fit into Coach Jay Gruden’s offense. It’s being reported that Chester being cut saves the Redskins $4 million in cap space.
Expect to see second year RG Spencer Long take over. He has potential and Bill Callahan could very well mold him into a reliable starting Guard in the NFL.
The team also spent a 4th round draft pick on Arie Kouandjio, Guard from Alabama. If Kouandjio impresses in OTA’s and Training Camp he could very well surprise some people and make a push to start.
After these two cuts and $6.2 million dollars in cap spaced saved, the Skins could very well begin focusing on re-signing Ryan Kerrigan and Trent Williams to long term contracts.
