With only a handful of days remaining before the official start of the 2015 NFL Draft, Washington Redskins General Manager Scot McCloughan’s phone must be getting a work out like never before.
Picking at #5 overall, the Redskins first round pick has the potential to be highly valued by teams looking to trade up. Already in the past 48 hours, Oakland Raiders GM Reggie McKenzie and New York Jets GM Mike Macccagnan have made comments in the media about the trade value of their respective picks at #4 and #6.
What is interesting, however, is the vast difference in their comments.
Raiders GM McKenzie told CSN Bay Area that he has taken calls already from other NFL executives gauging what the cost would be to move up to #4, whilst on the other side of the country Jets GM Maccagnan told the media at a press conference on Friday that he has made calls about the cost of trading up.
The Redskins are wedged in between these two teams, yet McCloughan has remained tight-lipped when it comes to talking to the media, refusing to give any hints as to what the Redskins may have planned for the 5th overall pick.
At this stage it seems to be a fait accompli that the 1st and 2nd picks will be Jameis Winston and Marcus Mariota, although which teams they go to could still change. In this scenario, the Jaguars appear content to stay at 3 and take the best player on their draft board, given that they are (at least for the moment) content with QB Blake Bortles. If Oakland similarly decides not to trade out of 4, that means that the Redskins pick at 5th may be the first real opportunity for teams looking to trade up to get their man.
Although the draft is still 4 sleeps away for young rookies hoping to start their NFL careers, make no mistake; Scot McCloughan is already on the clock.
