Scot McCloughan will address the media at noon today and I will be following with live coverage.
Here are the highlights of the presser:
- 5th year option will be picked up on RGIII and used on Monday.
- Likes RGIII and believes in him and excited for his future.
- Would love to get 10 picks out of draft.
- Will not draft for NEED, strategy is drafting best player available.
- Looking for more size on the offensive line.
- Won’t say what position he thinks is deepest in draft.
- Wants size, length, toughness, quickness at OLB. Wants to add another pass rusher.
- Will not hesitate taking best player available, regardless of position.
- Ongoing contract talks with Ryan Kerrigan and Trent Williams. No rush or timetable.
- Feels good about Chris Culliver and believes he is a good guy, not concerned with off the field issues.
- Believes OT’s should have power, be tall, long arms, have power.
- Center should be highly intelligent and big guy.
- Looking to add quality players on all sides of the ball, including special teams.
- Draft board will be set Thursday morning.
- Picking up RGIII option does not change draft approach.
- Believes there are stars in the draft that will be impact players for a long time.
- Likes Dashon Goldson as a person and a great leader. Drafted him in San Fran. Believes impact player.
- As a GM looks for intelligence and heart, wants to find players with that “IT” factor.
- Wants team players.
- No trade offers for Kirk Cousins. Willing to listen to trade but not forcing offers.
- Same draft approach that he had in San Francisco.
- Scot says he will have final say in draft picks, but understands it’s a team effort from coaches and scouts.
- Believes there is talent available in every round. Wants competition at every position.
- Likes the energy level from the players, even after coming off a tough season.
- Thinks now is the time for players to start forming bond to be ready for the season, and to build relationships going into the season.
Final thoughts:
As I reported last week, the 5th year option will be picked up on RGIII. McCloughan speaks very highly of Griffin and doesn’t want to give up on him. He believes that in 2012 he proved he can be a successful player in this league.
It’s very clear that McCloughan’s strategy is to take the best player available regardless of position. He is not going to draft based on need but who is highest on his board. Also stressed that he believes it’s a “big man’s game”. Also worth noting is that McCloughan is hoping to have 10 draft picks.
With the draft just a few days away, this is the calm before the storm but come 8pm on Thursday the fun begins!
