Junior Galette Signs

News broke here at lunch time on Friday in Richmond at Redskins Training Camp that the Redskins had indeed signed former New Orleans Saints Linebacker Junior Galette after his visit with team officials continued on late Thursday evening.

NFL Network’s Albert Breer, who is in town for the Redskins camp, broke the news on Twitter and revealed that Galette had, surprisingly, agreed to sign on a 1 year veteran minimum contract that should net the 5 year pro approximately $740,000 in 2015.

Galette has numerous connections to the Redskins already, sharing the same agent as DeAngelo Hall and playing with Terrance Knighton at Temple University.

What role specifically Galette will play with the Redskins remains to be seen, however he joins an already vastly improved Redskins Defensive Line alongside 2015 additions Stephen Paea, Preston Smith, and Knighton. Galette has undeniable talent, tallying up 45 Quarterback hurries and 10 sacks in 2014. The Redskins tallied 36 sacks as a team in 2014, ranking them as 21st in the NFL, so adding Galette’s talent into the front 7 should be a no-brainer move.

However, Galette has faced scrutiny after his arrest in January after he was accused of injuring a women at his home in Louisiana. Whilst he was not prosecuted, don’t be surprised if Galette ends up with a league suspension to start the season.

The team is yet to comment on what impact the off-field concerns had on their decision to sign Galette, and Head Coach Jay Gruden is expected to be inundated with questions at his afternoon press conference.

For now, Galette brings a noticeable nastiness to the Redskins pass rush that should generate immediate results on the field. Whilst he’s excellent against the pass, he hasn’t excelled as a run-stopper so expect 2nd year Linebacker Trent Murphy to still be a big part of the defensive rotation.
