A very wise individual once said, “judge me by my size do you? And well you should not!” That quote was by Yoda of course, and if you didn’t already know that then we can’t be friends.
That quote goes hand and hand with Jamison Crowder, who is possibly one of the most underrated players in the entire league. Last season, Crowder played mostly in the slot where he caught 67 balls for 847 yards and 7 touchdowns. On top of that he averaged 12.6 yards per catch and caught just about everything thrown his way. Believe it or not, Crowder was targeted more than Jordan Reed and only 3 times less than Desean Jackson. Did I mention yet that he led the team in receiving touchdowns?
But wait; a guy who is 5’8″ and 174 pounds soaking wet isn’t supposed to put up numbers like that, right? That leads me to ask the question – at what point do we start to consider the fact that Crowder has the talent and ability to be a true #1 wide receiver?
Most will agree that it’s possible that the Redskins will be parting ways with both Pierre Garcon and Jackson here in the next few weeks, which leaves a Grand Canyon sized opportunity for Crowder to become the guy. Other than Crowder, the Redskins only other real option to be the top wideout is Josh Doctson, who is a virtual unknown due to injury. Now, I know most of you will say his stock will go down if Kirk Cousins leaves, but I tend to disagree. Crowder is a baller, and I fully expect him to ball out regardless of who is throwing him the ball. Why you ask? Because he’s a safety blanket, and I’m going to assume that whoever is playing quarterback is smart enough to realize that, and if he doesn’t, he will very quickly.
There once was a guy named Antonio Brown who was drafted in the 6th round because he was told he was too small. Fast forward to present day and most will tell you he’s one of the best receivers in football. It’s all about making the most of your opportunity, and much like Brown, Crowder has done exactly that.
I think it’s time that we stop limiting a guy and telling him what he “can’t do” because of his size, it’s time to break that barrier and take the reigns off of Jamison Crowder and let him be the star player that he can be.
If the world didn’t learn who Jamison Crowder was in 2016, just wait until the 2017 season.
