Analysis: Redskins select Josh Doctson
The popular thinking prior to the draft was that the Washington Redskins were going to address the defensive side of the ball with their first round pick in the 2016 NFL draft. But, as we all know by now, General Manager Scot McCloughan dances to the beat of his own drum, and has taken TCU Wide Receiver Josh Doctson.
The drafting of Doctson sends a clear signal that this pick is absolutely not simply a pick for the 2016 season, but the kind of selection that helps build the foundation for future success.
Washington has approximately $4 million in salary cap space at the time of writing. The Wide Receiver trio of DeSean Jackson, Pierre Garcon and Andre Roberts have a combined 2016 salary cap number of almost $20 million, and it’s clear that this combination of players does not represent the future moving forward to the Redskins.
It seems likely that the Redskins will cut Andre Roberts and free up $4 million before the 2016 season, but don’t be surprised if the Redskins also give strong consideration to letting Pierre Garcon leave as a free agent at the end of the 2016 season, or perhaps even more shockingly; release or trade him prior to the start of the 2016 season to free up salary cap space. Admittedly, that possibility isn’t likely, but we cannot rule it out completely.
The signing of Josh Norman made the size of Garcon’s 2016 cap hit suddenly more difficult to stomach, and by replacing him with a young rookie weapon like Doctson on a lower contract would certainly go a long way towards building the Redskins roster and give Redskins salary cap guru Eric Shaffer necessary financial flexibility.

Doctson also happens to give the Redskins size and strength that they haven’t had at the position in years, and he’s a true redzone threat that, when paired alongside players like DeSean Jackson and Jordan Reed, certainly improves the Redskins offense dramatically.
