Could Chris Cooley be returning to the NFL?

ESPN is reporting that the Arizona Cardinals have spoken with Chris Cooley and have expressed interest in signing him. The news was broken via Adam Schefter today.

Cooley last played in 2012, suiting up for 9 games for the Redskins. Since then he has moved into the broadcasting booth and radio. Cooley never officially retired, however, and has spent a lot of time working out and keeping his body ready in case the phone rang.

Cooley currently has a radio show on ESPN 980 and has expressed his interest in returning to the field, but also said it would be hard to imagine playing anywhere else outside of Washington. Furthermore, Cooley has remained very active in the both the Redskins community and the DMV area in general, and remains a fan favorite to this day.

The Arizona Cardinals desperately need a Tight End, which consists of nothing but unknowns. It could be a good fit, however if he underperforms it could tarnish his legacy. That also brings up the other question, would the Redskins ever welcome Cooley back to the team? Right now the Skins have Jordan Reed, Niles Paul, and Logan Paulsen. If anything, Cooley would made a reliable and solid third string TE on the roster.

I’m sure Cooley will give it a great amount of thought on if he wants to suit up again or not, but for now he is a player that has become a Redskins fan favorite and someone that most of us will always remember in the burgundy and gold.
