Redskins returning to the days of the Hogs

Finally the mystery and speculation of the first round in the 2015 NFL Draft is over! The 5th overall pick is in and the Redskins took the best Offensive Lineman in the draft in Brandon Scherff, OL from Iowa.

Many people were surprised (including myself), to see Leonard Williams from USC fall to the 5th pick. Many experts and analysts believed that he was the safest pick in this years draft. As I was watching the draft live, I thought for sure that Williams would end up being the pick. At the same time I started running scenarios through my head as to where exactly Williams would play and how that would effect the players we currently have on the defensive line. After Free Agency, one of the Redskins strengths has suddenly become the defensive line, with the additions of Stephen Paea, Ricky Jean-Francois, and Terrance Knighton. The Skins also still have Jason Hatcher and Chris Baker as well. With that said, as good as Leonard Williams could be, he would be part of a very talented and crowded defensive line.

Since day one Scot McCloughan has preached getting nasty and bigger in the trenches. With the focus being the defensive line in free agency, it only made sense for the Redskins to make priority #1 in the draft the offensive line. With one of the best Left Tackle’s in the game in Trent Williams, getting a stud like Scherff to play on the opposite side of him is a great move.

Jay Gruden in yesterday’s press conference said that he plans on moving Scherff to RT, but also loves his versatility and believes that he could play any position on the offensive line. This brings up the question as to what the team will do with Morgan Moses. I believe the Skins could very well try him at Guard.

With round 1 in the books, there are still 6 more rounds to go and many more questions to be answered. But so far McCloughan has stuck to his word with building in the trenches and it looks like the Redskins are heading in the right direction.

Could the Redskins be returning to the glory days of the Hogs?

More NFL Draft excitement is on the way, but don’t be surprised if McCloughan and the Skins continue to focus on the big men up front.
