Unless there is a trade up or a trade down -both of which are very plausible options- the Redskins have the 6th pick of the second round on Friday when the NFL Draft continues.
After a first round full of drama and surprises, there’s still some immensely talented prospects who are going to be available.
By taking Brandon Scherff, GM Scot McCloughan has demonstrated to the world that he is serious about accentuating the talent that the Redskins already have.
With that in mind, here are the top 10 players still on the board who fit the Redskins, and why Scot McCloughan could be intrigued by them.
RCC - Top 10 Rookies Still Available RCC - Top 10 Rookies Still Available #1 OLB Randy Gregory
There is no doubting Gregory’s talent; he slid out of the 1st round due to off-field character concerns, and teams are reluctant to give a guy with such concerns the guaranteed money that comes along with the territory of being a 1st round pick.
The Redskins still can stand to upgrade their pass rush, and Gregory would be a no-brainer if he’s available at pick 38. I don’t expect he’d be available at 38 though.#2 SS Landon Collins
Three months ago if you had said that Landon Collins would slide out of the 1st round, most people would be shocked. If you had said that he wouldn't even be the first safety off the board, it would have been considered crazy.
Yes, Landon Collins isn’t a perfect prospect, but he plays with heart and aggression. Famously, he wants to play for the Redskins badly. He showed up to the draft in a burgundy tie, and after sliding out of the 1st round, he’ll be keen to prove to the NFL world that he is the real deal.
Dashon Goldson will turn 31 this year, and Jeron Johnson is unproven as a permanent starter at the position, so Landon Collins could give new defensive coordinator a lot of talent and flexibility. #3 OLB/DE Owamagbe Odighizuwa
Another prospect who many thought had a good chance of going in the 1st, Odighizuwa could slot in opposite Ryan Kerrigan and, in-tandem with Trent Murphy, have fun going after Eli Manning, Sam Bradford and Tony Romo on day 1 this season.#4 DT Eddie Goldman
If you saw the instant twitter reaction when the Redskins passed on Leonard Williams, you’ll know that the DT position is one that was coveted by some fans. Eddie Goldman has the talent to be a day 1 starter, and he has the attitude and size that McCloughan talks highly of. #5 ILB Eric Kendricks
Keenan Robinson enjoyed a great break out season for the Redskins in 2014, which simply highlighted how poor Perry Riley Jr was opposite him.
Kendricks is the brother of Philadelphia Eagles ILB Mychal Kendricks, and many consider him to be an even better player. Eric Kendricks can slot in next to Keenan Robinson, and complement each other beautifully.
#6 Dorial Green-Beckham
A 6’5 WR with good hands who runs a 4.49 40 yard dash? Normally, teams would fall over themselves to draft a player who fits that criteria, but DGB has famously had numerous off-field issues.
In the pre-draft process, he seemingly convinced scouts and NFL teams that all that was behind him, and some thought that he would go in the 1st round. For the Redskins, he would provide a huge target that would be almost impossible to over-throw. #7 CB Jalen Collins
Breeland and Culliver should be a nice combination on the outside in 2015, and hopefully DeAngelo Hall can recover from his achilles and contribute nicely as well. However, the Redskins still need depth at the position, and Jalen Collins is a very intriguing prospect.
6’1, 205lbs, and a strong college career for LSU, he would fit in well with the Redskins and provide additional defensive back talent for a unit that has been consistently hit by injuries in recent years. #8 DT Jordan Phillips
Phillips is a big mean defensive tackle that, similar to Eddie Goldman, would fit what Scot McCloughan has publicly said he looks for in linemen.
6’6 and a solid 335lbs, Phillips can rotate through the front seven with Chris Baker and Terrance Knighton. #9 WR Jaelen Strong
I originally mocked Jaelen Strong to the Texans at 16, so the fact that he may possibly be on the board at 38 is both exciting and a little bit surprising. At 6’3 and 218lbs, he has size that the Redskins do not currently have at receiver, and with a total of 82 receptions for 10 touchdowns in 2014 at Arizona State, he has the ball skills and the hands that make him an attractive prospect for Washington.#10 OL La’el Collins
La’el Collins has an undeniable first round talent grade, with a huge question mark presently hanging over his head.
On talent alone, he should be #1 on this ‘best 2nd round prospects’ list, and good friends of RCC Emmanual Benton from PPI and Mark Bullock from the Washington Post were both huge fans of his, nominating him as a potential Redskins target if Washington traded back from 5.
If somehow he can clear his name from being associated with the nasty business of the mother of his child being murdered, then he may get a chance at draft redemption, hearing his name called out tomorrow. Definitely a big storyline to watch on day 2.
